31 Days of October Horror

And we’re off! I’m doing 31 horror films in 31 days. Enjoy!

October 1: House on Haunted Hill – 1959

The ONLY way to kick off spooky season is with this classic. I mean, Vincent Price, amirite? Also, BEST line ever in a horror film, “The only ghoul in the house is you.” LOVE IT! I will never get tired of this one.

And of course watching Nora chew the scenery is HILARIOUS.

I really need some crackers to go with this cheese but OMG I just love, love, LOVE this movie, cheese and all.

October 2: Run – 2020

Found this on a random search of my streaming services. Sarah Paulson pulls out unhinged once again. Fairly predictable psychological thriller but it did have a few good plot twists and was overall enjoyable.

October 3: The Dinner – 2017

This one looked like it might be a good psychological thriller on paper but it dragged. Not bad overall but could have been better.

October 4: Hereditary – 2018

Okay, first of all I love Toni Colette and Gabriel Byrne in ANYTHING but dang this was a really good psychological thriller. I’m going to need to watch some comedy to come down from this one.

October 5: Saw – 2004

I didn’t see this when it came out, so here we are. WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FUCK. I don’t feel the need to see the sequels at this point. It was pretty good plot-wise and had a good amount of gore, but yeah, I think one is enough.

October 6: Renfield – 2023

I fucking LOVE this movie. Cursing myself right now for not seeing it in the theater. Cheesy gore meets self help. I love it. LOVE IT.

October 7: Halloween III: Season of the Witch – 1982

Had to go back and see this again since I hadn’t seen it in decades. That freaking Silver Shamrock song has been stuck in my head FOREVER.

This one does not hold up over the ages – I had FAR too little wine to go with this cheese. Still, that damn song…

October 8: The Fog – 1980

This scared the CRAP out of me when it came out, but now…meh. I’m going in pursuit of better horror because this isn’t it.

October 9: Life After Beth – 2014

I don’t even know what to say about this one. It’s pretty campy and I busted out laughing more than once. Most random movie I’ve picked so far.

October 10: Halloween – 2018

Jamie Lee Curtis is back! This one has the feel of the original with lots of gratuitous violence and gore. Absolutely loved this one.

October 11: The Invitation – 2015

Psychological thriller. Basically a dinner party going wrong in a really fucked up way. Weird yet creepy ending. Not awesome, but not horrible.

October 12: Malevolent – 2018

Scamming paranormal investigators encounter the real deal. This one was pretty good. Had some good creepy moments and an interesting plot twist.

October 13: I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House – 2016

A movie that could have been a commercial. Kept waiting for something to happen but, meh. Don’t bother.

October 14: The Lodge – 2019

I’m clearly striking out on the horror movies this month. This one, which HBOMax thinks is “scary level 4” is…meh. This is getting exhausting.

October 15: The Strangers – 2008

OOH, FINALLY! Three masked intruders terrorize a couple in a remote summer house. Lots of jump scares, gore, and screaming. This one will definitely put you in the Halloween spirit.

October 16: The Woman in the Window – 2021

This was a good one. Psychological thriller about an agoraphobic woman thinks she sees a crime from her window (yes, I know it’s been done). Nice twisty ending.

October 17: The Black Phone – 2021

I meant to see this in the theater and never got around to it. This one is great! Clever plot and really well done. I don’t want to give too much away, but check it out.

October 18: The Open House – 2018

This one looked promising and did have some creep factor but the ending left more questions than answers.

October 19: The Boogeyman – 2023

Adaption of the Stephen King story (watched it on the 19th, huh huh huh). One of the better adaptations I’ve seen.

October 20: They/Them – 2022

Great premise, shitty execution. So much wasted promise.

October 21: The Pit and the Pendulum – 1961

I mean, come on, it’s not Halloween unless you watch a Vincent Price fick. Plus, I had to test drive this DVD because my Price collection is growing. These are cheesy good and I am here for it.

October 22: Trick ‘r Treat – 2007

Well, this was weird. Not bad, just…weird. I like.

October 23: I See You – 2019

Normally I don’t go to bed in the middle of a movie but:

a) It was boring

b) I was tired

Can’t even finish this one. Total bust. The fact that it’s 7:45PM should tell you all you need to know about this.

I’m out.

October 24: Gaslight – 1944

Been meaning to watch this one for awhile now. I guess it holds up okay given how old it is. Did not dislike.

October 25: Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer – 1986

Well, that was a weird one. Not really scary, but did have some gratuitous gore. Probably would recommend you pass on this one.

October 26: Watcher – 2022

A little slow moving, but a great ending. I’d recommend.

October 27: The Nun – 2018

NOW we’re talking! Demonic possession, Catholics getting all twitchy, nice twisty ending. I am here for it!

October 28: Hocus Pocus – 1993

We went to the local theater to see this one. While not truly horror, it was a damn good time and the movie holds up really, really well. If you get a chance to see it on the big screen, definitely do.

October 29: The Blackcoat’s Daughter – 2015

This one seemed to have some seriously missing plot points. Definitely needed more backstory.

October 30: You Are Not My Mother – 2022

OOH, this was a good one. Creepy and a little weird.

October 31: Split – 2017

Well, that was an excellent way to end the 31 days of October horror! Good psychological drama and definitely kept my attention. Loved it!

And, that’s it for this installment of the 31 Days of October Horror. The main takeaway I have here is, if you’re trolling through streaming channels looking for content, when it comes to horror, you have to shuffle through a LOT of chaff to get to the wheat. YMMV.
